Since the iPhone 15 launched, one complaint has refused to go away: the phone gets hot. Like, really hot. Reddit threads, YouTube comments, Apple support forums — people everywhere have been venting (pun intended) about their devices turning into hand warmers during normal use. So we decided to stop reading the takes and start running the tests ourselves.

We put several iPhone 15 units through a series of real-world scenarios over a few weeks — gaming sessions, marathon video recordings, navigation runs, and heavy social media scrolling — across different environments, from an air-conditioned office to a sun-baked car dashboard in a Texas parking lot. Here's what we actually found.

First, Let's Be Clear: All Phones Get Warm

Before we get into the data, it's worth grounding expectations. Every smartphone generates heat. That's physics, not a defect. When your processor is working hard — rendering a game, encoding video, pulling data from the cloud — it produces thermal energy. The question isn't whether a phone gets warm. It's whether it gets too warm, too fast, under conditions that should be totally routine.

Apple's A16 Bionic in the base iPhone 15 and the A17 Pro in the Pro models are both powerful chips. Power and heat tend to go hand in hand. So the real test is whether Apple's thermal management is keeping things in a reasonable range — or whether users have a legitimate gripe.

What We Tested and How

We ran four main scenarios across three iPhone 15 units (two standard models, one Pro):

  1. Extended gaming — 45-minute sessions of Genshin Impact and Call of Duty Mobile, which are both known to push mobile hardware hard.
  2. 4K video recording — continuous recording at 4K/60fps for 20 minutes, then again with ProRes enabled on the Pro model.
  3. Navigation + streaming combo — Google Maps running in the foreground while a podcast streamed in the background, simulating a road trip setup.
  4. Ambient heat exposure — all three tasks repeated with the phone sitting in direct sunlight near a window, around 85°F ambient temperature.

We used a non-contact infrared thermometer to measure surface temperature at the back center of each device every five minutes. We also tracked whether the phone throttled performance or displayed any system warnings.

Gaming: Warm, But Not Alarming

After 45 minutes of Genshin Impact, our standard iPhone 15 units were sitting around 104–108°F on the back glass. That's warm — noticeably so if you've got it in your hands the whole time. But it never triggered a thermal warning, and frame rates stayed consistent throughout the session.

The Pro model ran slightly hotter during the same test, which makes sense given the A17 Pro pushing more graphical muscle. We saw peaks around 111°F. Still no warnings, still no throttling. Uncomfortable to hold for long stretches? Sure. Dangerous or abnormal? Not based on what we saw.

For context, industry standards generally put the "concerning" threshold for surface temps at around 113°F or above for extended periods. We were close, but not there.

4K Video: This Is Where Things Got Interesting

Here's where the complaints start to make more sense. Recording 4K at 60fps is one of the most thermally intensive things you can ask a smartphone to do. After about 12 minutes of continuous recording on a standard iPhone 15, we started seeing surface temps climb toward 109°F. At the 18-minute mark, the phone issued a temperature warning and paused recording.

That's a real issue if you're trying to capture, say, your kid's entire soccer game or a long outdoor event. The Pro model with ProRes enabled hit the same wall even faster — around the 10-minute mark in warmer ambient conditions.

To be fair, Apple isn't the only one with this problem. We've seen similar thermal cutoffs on Samsung Galaxy devices during extended 4K sessions. But if you're buying the iPhone 15 specifically for its video capabilities, this is something you should know going in.

Navigation + Streaming: Basically a Non-Issue

This combo — which a lot of commuters and road-trippers use constantly — was the most relaxed scenario we tested. Temps hovered around 98–102°F over a 90-minute run. The phone stayed responsive, nothing throttled, and it barely felt warm in hand. If this is your primary use case and you're worried about heat, you can probably stop worrying.

Sun Exposure: Don't Do This

Leaving any phone in direct sunlight is asking for trouble, and the iPhone 15 is no exception. In our 85°F ambient test near a sunny window, the device hit thermal warning territory during gaming in under 20 minutes. This isn't an iPhone 15 problem specifically — it's a smartphone problem universally. The lesson here is simple: don't leave your phone on the dashboard or in direct sun while you're using it heavily.

So Should You Actually Be Worried?

Honestly, it depends on how you use your phone. For most people doing everyday stuff — texting, social media, streaming video, even casual gaming — the iPhone 15 runs warm but well within normal limits. The thermal management is doing its job.

Where legitimate concerns exist is in the 4K video recording space, especially for content creators or anyone shooting long-form footage outdoors in summer heat. If that's you, plan for shorter recording bursts, keep the phone in shade when possible, and consider a third-party cooling accessory if you're shooting professionally.

Practical Tips to Keep Things Cooler

The Bottom Line

The iPhone 15 does run warm — warmer than some users expected, and in certain scenarios (long 4K shoots, direct sun exposure), it can genuinely hit uncomfortable territory. But the apocalyptic overheating narrative that's been floating around online is overblown for most everyday users.

If you're a casual user, you're probably fine. If you're a video creator pushing ProRes in the summer heat, you'll want to build some workarounds into your workflow. Either way, now you know what you're actually dealing with — not just what someone complained about on Reddit.
