Let's be honest — most of us don't care what a phone scores on Geekbench. What we care about is whether it keeps up with us. Does it open Instagram before we've already put it back in our pocket? Can it handle a 10-minute gaming session without turning into a hand warmer? Can it export a video edit while we're still in the parking lot?

That's exactly what we set out to answer. We spent two weeks running the iPhone 15 Pro Max and the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra through the kinds of tasks real people actually do — not synthetic tests designed to flatter a spec sheet.

The Chips Behind the Curtain

Before we get into the results, a quick primer on what's powering each device. The iPhone 15 Pro Max runs on Apple's A17 Pro chip, the first 3nm processor to ship in a consumer smartphone. Samsung's Galaxy S24 Ultra is rocking the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 (in the US version), which is also built on a 4nm process and represents Qualcomm's best work to date.

On paper, they're both monsters. In practice, the gap shows up in some unexpected places.

App Switching: The Everyday Speed Test

This is where most people spend the most time, and it's where the differences are subtle but real. Flipping between Chrome, Spotify, Google Maps, and a messaging app felt snappy on both devices — no complaints from either camp. But when we started stacking more apps in memory (think 12 to 15 apps open simultaneously), the iPhone 15 Pro Max held its own noticeably better.

Apps we'd left open for an hour on the S24 Ultra occasionally needed to reload, especially memory-hungry ones like Slack or Reddit. The Pro Max, thanks in part to Apple's tight control over how iOS manages RAM, kept things in memory longer. It's not a dealbreaker on Samsung's side, but if you're the type who hates waiting for an app to reload mid-thought, Apple has the edge here.

Mobile Gaming: Heat Is the Real Enemy

We fired up Genshin Impact and Call of Duty: Mobile on both phones and played for 30-minute continuous sessions — the kind of extended play you might do on a flight or a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Both phones handled graphics beautifully. Frame rates were smooth and visuals were sharp on each display. But around the 20-minute mark, the S24 Ultra started running noticeably warm — not uncomfortably hot, but warm enough that Samsung's built-in frame rate throttling kicked in to manage heat. Performance dipped slightly as a result.

The iPhone 15 Pro Max stayed cooler throughout, and Apple's thermal management kept performance more consistent from the first minute to the last. The titanium frame actually helps dissipate heat more effectively than people give it credit for. For serious mobile gamers, that sustained performance matters a lot.

Video Editing: Where the A17 Pro Flexes

This one wasn't particularly close. We edited a 3-minute 4K clip in DaVinci Resolve on both phones, applying color grading, transitions, and a basic audio mix. Export time on the iPhone 15 Pro Max: about 38 seconds. The S24 Ultra clocked in around 54 seconds.

More importantly, the Pro Max's ProRes video capture and the efficiency of Apple's video encoding pipeline give it a real advantage for creators. If you're someone who shoots and edits on your phone — content creators, social media managers, anyone documenting their life — the iPhone's workflow is faster and the output quality is genuinely impressive.

Samsung isn't far behind, and its 200MP camera sensor has its own bragging rights in photography. But for video production on the go, Apple wins this round comfortably.

Multitasking: Samsung's Android Advantage

Here's where the S24 Ultra earns its keep. Android's multitasking capabilities are simply more flexible. Split-screen apps, floating windows, Samsung DeX — if you're someone who treats your phone like a mini workstation, the S24 Ultra gives you tools the iPhone can't match.

Running a spreadsheet alongside a video call while referencing a PDF? The S24 Ultra handles that workflow more naturally. The iPhone 15 Pro Max is fast, but iOS still limits how you can use that speed in a multitasking context. It's a philosophical difference between the two platforms as much as a hardware one.

The Verdict: Fast in Different Ways

Here's the thing — both of these phones are faster than anything most of us actually need. The question is what kind of fast matters to you.

If you prioritize raw processing speed, sustained gaming performance, and a smoother video editing workflow, the iPhone 15 Pro Max is the one to beat. Apple's chip efficiency and thermal management give it a real-world advantage that shows up in everyday use.

If you want more flexible multitasking, a richer feature set for power users, and don't mind a bit of thermal throttling during marathon gaming sessions, the Galaxy S24 Ultra is a phenomenal machine that holds its own against anything on the market.

Neither phone is going to slow you down. But depending on how you use your phone, one of them is going to feel like it was made for you — and the other one will feel like it was made for someone else.
